Jan 13 Verification

Forecast verification updated 1pm EST - 13 Jan 2011

The 12 Z GFS run yesterday compared to the actual 12 Z GFS for today was too warm by about 5-10 degrees C in the Midwest. Clouds cleared out earlier then anticipated and temperatures dropped quickly this morning. The cold air was also underestimated in the South where there is also fresh snow cover. In the Pacific Northwest, the models handled the cold a lot better and were closer. Overall it looks like the models underestimated  the cold in areas with fresh snowcover.
