This is a large scale view of the Northern Hemisphere forecast of 500mb heights for 36 hours. As you can see, there is a strong high pressure system which has persisted over Greenland for a long time. This blocking high pressure has prevented short waves from moving through this area which would have brought more spring-like weather to most of the country. As a result of the High pressure, the upper level winds have dipped out of the Northwest to across the southern states bringing cold weather to almost all of the nation. This is expected to persist at least throughout the entire short-range forecast.
