This is a look at the 72 hour projected precipitation from the 18 March 12Z run, with the actual precipitation contours overlayed.  The observed totals come from a combination of radar and gauge data.  The "hand" of Michigan is highlighted here, where heavy lake effect snow fell due to the cold NW wind.  Overall, the GFS handled this event fairly well, considering its large grid spacing.  It underestimated the areas where the most fell and overestimated the areas where the least precip fell.  The U.P. saw even higher snow totals, though this is not pictured here.
