Analysis valid 2:00pm EST 27 Jan 2013
The coldest air is currently on final approach to the Lafayette area. But as quickly as it will arrive, so will be its departure. 850 temps show some moderation of the coldest air pocket going into Tuesday which would make one assume that low temperatures are not going to be as cold as what they were previously thought to be a few days ago. 850 temps look to be around -20 to -25 C by 9z Tuesday. The dome of the cold air then quickly departs during the later part of Tuesday and into Wednesday. By early Wednesday morning, 850 temps should be roughly -10 to -15 C as we begin to change patterns from a more pineapple express with a northwesterly flow of clipper after clipper with arctic blast to a zonal flow. While temperatures will moderate, this will allow increase chances for large storm complexes.
