While most precipitation will occur in the midwest associated with a large trough pattern, a shortwave trough will also develop further south in Texas late Tuesday. This shortwave produces a sufficient vorticity maximum for positive vorticity advection to induce upward motion and precipitation. The location of the local vorticity maximum is denoted with a red "X" and the date at which is located in a region is seen on the map. The vorticity maximum moves eastward over the short range time period, originating on the New Mexico/Texas border and making its way across the southern gulf states.
